Pakistan shifts position on Kashmir

In what is being seen as a possible major breakthrough on the Kashmir problem, Pakistan President General Pervez Musharraf, has for the first time said that Pakistan is prepared to give up its claim on Kashmir.

Speaking to NDTV's Prannoy Roy, General Musharraf explained that under the four-point solution to Kashmir, Pakistan will also give up its old demand for a plebiscite in Kashmir and will forget all the UN resolutions.

Reacting to the General's comment India's Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma said, boundaries cannot be redrawn but New Delhi stands for peace.

Senior Strategic Affairs analyst Dr C Raja Mohan believes Musharraf is offering India a new template to discuss the issue of Jammu and Kashmir.

Senior analyst from the IDSA C Uday Bhasker believes Musharraf's statement on dropping Pakistan's insistence on independence for Kashmir is a signal to voices of azadi that Pakistan no longer supports that view.
