For Djokovic to retain his number 3 spot the task was simple, but not straightforward. The Serb was required to defend his Rome title from 2008 if he hoped to fend off Murray for another week, knowing that he would likely have to go through Rafael Nadal to do so. However, it wasn't to be for Djokovic, as he went down in staight sets to the imperious Spaniard in today's Rome Masters 1000 final.
