About Jack LaLanne
Jack LaLanne is a world-renowned author, lecturer, and expert on physical fitness who began his life as a weak, sickly child overcoming that adversity to become a champion body-builder and fitness pioneer. In the 1930's, he invented a new style of weight lifting apparatus using pulleys, cables and weight selectors.
These inventions, along with the leg extension machine, became the forerunners of today's modern gym equipment. He opened the first modern health club in 1936 and was able to keep it open while doing a stint in the US Navy in WW II. After the war, Jack continued to run his health clubs which grew to more than one location when, in 1951, he was asked to audition for a spot on the ABC television station, KGO in San Francisco. Jack started the first exercise show in television history. Jack also met his wife, Elaine at KGO
