Countries with a conservative attitude towards sex and sex education tend to have a higher rate of teenage pregnancy and STIs, studies have shown.

Currently, the sex education curriculum in England focuses primarily on the reproductive system, foetal development and the physical and emotional development of puberty.

 

Until recently, issues of contraception and safe sex were not compulsory.

 

In comparison with other European countries, the English attitude towards teaching young people about sex is poor.


“It is clear that economic circumstances still largely determine the likelihood of teenage pregnancy.

Until recently, parents could remove their children from sex education classes, but under the new system this will not be accepted.

 

However, Mr Knight has assured parents that the lessons can be taught within a “values context” and that the lessons can be adapted to suit the beliefs of pupils with different faiths and nationalities.
