Milk and meat from cloned cattle, pigs and goats is now officially as safe to eat as their everyday counterparts, says the US food safety authority.
Cloned animals are most commonly produced using somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT)
genetic material of an animal with desirable traits is inserted into an egg
then implanted into a surrogate mother.
The FDA issued a final risk assessment on cloned animals after reviewing more than 700 studies.
it will not require special labelling on meat and milk
Assuming unhealthy clones are removed from entering the food chain, cloning should bring no new risks
acknowledged that SCNT is a relatively new technology and the available data on safety as well as impacts on the environment and animal welfare is limited.
It said most studies have been of small sample size and relatively short term.
According to the BBC, the European Union has indicated that if products from cloned animals were approved, they would have to be labelled.
