A veterinarian and an orthodontist joined forces recently

Mary Legler, of Kankakee, brought a large, red ear slider turtle into Natural Pet Animal Hospital. A young couple had found the turtle on Interstate 55 about one hour south of Wilmington. It had been struck by a car. They took the injured animal to Legler, a state licensed wildlife rehabilitator

Legler consulted her list of rehabilitators and found Dr. Becker, who is both state and federally licensed to care for wild animals. Early Monday morning three weeks ago she arrived with the injured animal.

Becker's husband Dave Ulrich, Natural Pet's business manager, came up with the innovative idea credited for fixing the turtle

Ulrich wondered whether they could apply braces to the turtle shell

orthodontist Dr. Robert Chavez

lent the parts

Ulrich applied the metal brackets using Krazy Glue to each of the broken scutes and the healthy part of the shell

the braces came off recently and the shell is in one piece again
