UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a statement he is ``deeply concerned at the potential for continued acts of violence and terrorism to undermine the political process.''

Israel's Channel Two said the gunman was a resident of east Jerusalem, the sector of the city that the Palestinians seek as the capital of their planned independent state.

Hamas Gunmen

Hamas gunmen celebrated the attack in the streets of Gaza City by firing guns into the air.

More than 125 Palestinians were killed earlier this week in an Israeli military operation in Gaza. The incursion was prompted by the firing of Grad rockets by Hamas at Israel that hit the southern seaside city of Ashkelon
