AFTER almost five years, Wangaratta’s bid to write itself into the Guinness Book of Records is nearing an end.
A world record attempt for the longest scarf, launched at Wangaratta's Stitched Up Textile Festival in 2003, will officially draw to a close on July 31.
More than 30 kilometres has been knitted so far - but that’s still short of the 53 kilometre record.
Virginia Eckels said hundreds of people had knitted metre long lengths, and she has appealed for everyone to get on board in the final months.
"Once the scarf is completed and assessed for the record attempt, it will be broken up and rearranged into blankets for distribution to the needy, so as well as being an enjoyable pastime, this is a worthwhile project to be part of," she said.
