OSCAR winner KARL MALDEN - who starred in US television show The Streets of San Francisco - has died aged 97.


The american actor - born Mladen George Sekulovich - best known for roles in Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire and On the Waterfront - died in his sleep at about 2.30am (0930 GMT) in his Los Angeles home, according to his agent.


Malden, who won his Academy Award for his performance alongside Marlon Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire had been struggling with his health for several years.


In a career spanning seven decades, Malden made his mark portraying plain-spoken gruff men although he was also noted for bringing a natural dignity to many of his roles.


His talents earned him a place in the works of playwrights Arthur Miller and Tennessee Williams, as well as directors Alfred Hitchcock and John Frankenheimer.


And he shared the screen with the likes of Vivien Leigh, Montgomery Clift, Rod Steiger and George C. Scott.
