“We had been hiking for three days when we hiked through a rural village and found this baboon.  He had a dog-collar around his neck and was tied to a pole with less then a meter of chain,” says Rhyan.

“We estimated his age to be about seven-years old - it is almost impossible to catch and handle a baboon after they are two years old - which means he was chained for over five years!

“He had no shelter - just a rock to sit on. He sat out in the open facing the cold berg winds, the snow, the rain and the hot blistering sun. His coat had been bleached a pale grey colour due to the long exposure to the weather.”

Rhyan knew he couldn’t sit back and do nothing, so he contacted KZN Wildlife, which explained that the only thing they could do was to destroy the animal as it was suffering and probably couldn’t be rehabilitated. That wasn’t an option for Rhyan so he called C.R.O.W.
