Strong quakes rock Indonesia's Sulawesi

JAKARTA (AFP) - Two strong earthquakes have rocked Indonesia's Sulawesi island but there were no reports of casualties or damage.

The first earthquake, measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, occurred at 10:56 am local time (0256 GMT) at a depth of 61 kilometers (38 miles), said Dwi Joko of the National Meteorology and Geophysics Agency on Friday.

It was centered 165 kilometers west-northwest of Gorontalo in northern Sulawesi, he said.

Another quake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck near the same location at 1:35 pm local time, another meteorology official said.

There were no reports of casualties or damage, the official said.

The US Geological Survey put the magnitude of the two quakes at 5.6 and 5.3 respectively.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the city of Yogyakarta and its surrounds on the island of Java on May 27 and killed 5,855 people.
